Blogging on Blogging
Although I have created a few simple web sites in my day, and even once kept a blog, I am excited to start this new project. I look forward to working under the direction of a great professor, Dr. Kyburz, and along side my fellow students to learn and to create in this space.
I found the photo used as the background to this blog by searching for unlicensed photos in Google. That's pretty much the extent of my visual creativity - searching the web for striking images. A web site called Unsplash.com came up and it didn't take long to find something that struck me as the perfect image. A light bulb. I chose the light bulb for what it represents - brilliance, ideas, and invention. I've always thought of myself as an "Ideas Person". If pondering paid, I'd be a millionaire. It didn't take long to choose the right layout and design for my blog either. I have always been keen on straight lines and clean, crisp design. I like minimalism, maybe because it frees us from physical clutter which in turn frees us from mental clutter. More time to ponder I suppose. Frank Lloyd Wright, another proponent of straight lines, once said, "Less is more only when more is too much."
The font is default, and I think it works really well with the photo and white border. The title of my blog, "The Semester of Blog" was taken from my previous blog called, "The Year of the Blog" which is a play on the year of the dog. I don't know when the year of the dog is, but I thought it was clever.
I think the most difficult part of designing this blog was decided whether or not to create pages are to just post to the front page of the blog. For this post I opted for the front page as it's a standalone post that I don't think will require continuous updating. But for our other projects, like the documentary project and campus signage project I will create pages to keep all those posts in their own separate locations.
Other than that I feel blogger.com has made it extremely easy for anyone to create a good looking blog.
